We’re rolling out a big new development today:
Introducing Tag Channels.
Similar to Flickr’s tag pages or Twitter’s hashtags, Tumblr’s Tag Channels aggregate tagged posts from everyone on Tumblr in real time with a few special twists:
- To deal with the overwhelming volume of content that makes most real-time search incredibly unwieldy, we’ve developed a clustering engine that lets you quickly filter the 650,000 new Tumblr posts created every day, based on likes and reblogs. You can see a few of the best posts or more unfiltered posts.
- Our post-filtering is automatically calibrating to apply more or less filtering (by default) based on the level of activity in a channel.
- Built-in throttling (still being tweaked) prevents monopolization by individual blogs.
- Tags are normalized, so “Barack Obama” = “barackobama”.
- We’ve made it super-easy to track tags on your Dashboard.
We’re still right in the middle of development. A few things might be acting funny, and we’re not done with the central tag directory yet. So please bear with us!
Now start tagging your posts. :)

I have the raddest wife & son ever. One of their many collaborations…LLet’s just say there has been a lot of SQUEALING from my side of the office this week.
Since its inception, Colin Meloy’s Tumblr has given me such varied and squealworthy insights into his soul as:
1. his feelings on Depeche Mode (conflicted).
2. the type of bird-themed inlay featured on what is presumably photo of his guitar (adorable).
3. and, perhaps my favorite: these scanned in pictures that his wife/Carson Ellis/Decemberists album artist extraordinaire, and son drew together in their happy little notebook. Dinosaurs! Astronauts! BLINKING EYES, people!
I think part of why this is so interesting is that Colin Meloy and The Decemberists’ music is the kind of stuff that, as JD Salinger has already said much better than I, makes you wish he was “a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.”
In the meantime I will be following him on Tumblr and reblogging pictures of his wife’s Moleskine.I suggest you do the same.
Does anyone else here dream in Tumblr-speak? Last night, I dreamt that everything in the universe had Tumblarity. Monday had a miniscule score compared to Friday. Bacon edged out yogurt. Clowns lost out to algebra — which may surprise you — but I happen to have an irrational fear of clowns. Hey, it was my dream. You want clowns to win at everything? Have your own scary-ass dream.
And now, some Tumblrs that are even better than my snooze bar.
Animals With Casts
Why are animals with casts so freaking cute? Scientists remain baffled by this phenomenon, but have promised to continue performing double-blind experiments until a consensus is reached. Regardless, it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling to see some of our animal friends on the road to recovery. Get well soon, guys!Fuck Yeah, Disney Movies!
This is hardcore: One Disney movie, every day, all day. As I’m writing this, it’s before dawn and already there are 264 posts about Cars. Actually, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But it’s hard to overstate how ferociously FYDM attacks each and every film they cover. Walt would be proud.I Love My Scanner
And now, a story of forbidden love. A boy and his scanner, bound together by feelings our society refuses to understand, document their growing, unbreakable feelings of… Wait, what? He scans things he’d otherwise put in a junk drawer? Okay, that makes more sense. Cool!!Read to Me Tuesday
RtMT employs Tumblr’s Call in Audio feature for something interesting: Pick a passage from a book, call Tumblr, and read. Tag your post with “RTMT” and it’ll be reblogged to the site along with everyone else’s. Intriguing! (Step over here to setup your account for calls and to get the number.)the ragbag
Since 1882, Raynor has dispatched all manner of curiosities in categories as disparate as literature, animals, and sex. His contributions to animal nomenclature and use of Venn diagrams could only come from a beautiful and complex mind. Also, he never uses capital letters. This is all to say: Check him out.Now you! What are some other Tumblr blogs that you recommend?
